Reducing Your Risk — Stress Management

Does Stress Cause Cancer?
While some research has shown that animals exposed to stress have higher rates of breast and other cancer, the same findings have not been confirmed in human studies. To date, stress has not been proven to be a risk factor in breast cancer. ref

Although stress has not been scientifically shown to have an impact on the risk of developing breast cancer, a study of women with breast cancer has shown that they blame stress more than any other factor as a cause of their breast cancer. Researchers at the University Health Network at University of Toronto interviewed 378 breast cancer survivors and found that of the women interviewed, 42.2% felt stress was the main reason they developed cancer, this was followed by genetics (26.7%), environment (25.5%) and hormones (23.9%). ref

Stress is a part of our everyday lives. In many ways it enhances our lives by providing us with exciting challenges. But left unmanaged, chronic stress can compromise your physical and mental well-being. Studies examining the effects of stress have shown that the physical and emotional reactions we call stress do weaken the immune system leaving the body more susceptible to illness.

At the very least, reducing your personal stress will have a positive impact on your general health and well-being.
