Reducing Your Risk A Healthy
Diet
Diets rich in fruits and vegetables, high in fibre, and low
in overall fats and saturated fats have been strongly associated
with lower breast cancer rates.ref
Daily eating habits which seem to have a protective effect
on breast health include:
 |
Consuming 5 10 servings of a variety of fruits
and vegetables.
|
 |
Consuming whole grains and legumes for most of the
remaining calories.
|
 |
Consuming protein from vegetables, fish and hormone-free
poultry instead of from red meat.
|
 |
Avoiding full-fat dairy products and saturated fats
used in cooking, frying and baking.

A Healthy Diet cont'd
Most public health information regarding nutrition
has promoted diets which can help prevent cardiovascular
disease, North Americas number one cause of death.
The
Canadian Food Guide, the Four
Food Groups, and the Food
Pyramid have familiarized many people with dietary
guidelines for maintaining general good health and avoiding
heart disease. These same guidelines also appear to
be effective in reducing breast cancer risk.
One key area where a heart-healthy diet and a breast-healthy
diet differ is in the role of alcohol. While recent
research points to beneficial cardiovascular effects
from low to moderate alcohol consumption, cancer studies
show that these same consumption rates may be associated
with higher incidence of breast cancer. ref
