Early Detection — Breast Self-examination

Breast self exam is a technique of visual and tactile observations of the breasts by a woman or her partner. By feeling all areas of breast tissue with small circular motions of the hand, and by noting any visible changes of breast shape, or any nipple discharge, any changes can be reported to a physician for further assessment.

Though it has been widely promoted, breast self-exam has never been shown to reduce mortality rates from cancer. By the time a cancerous lump is detected, the cancer is already well established. ref Despite this limitation, breast self-exam is a good way for women to be familiar with their breast tissue, and may helpful in detecting cancers slightly earlier than they would otherwise be noted.
