Early Detection — Biopsy

Core Biopsy: Non-palpable

1.

While you are lying down, your breast is held still in a stereotactic biopsy machine.

2.

An anaesthetic is used to numb the area of concern. It is either injected, or applied to the skin.

3.

Mammograms are taken and the lesion is located.

4.

A small cut in the skin is made where the core biopsy needle will enter. A fast speed needle retrieves a section of tissue from the area identified by the mammogram. This may be repeated more than once, often about five times.

5.

The tissue cores are placed in a dish. Under a microscope, a pathologist searches for abnormalities in size of the tissue cells or appearances of the nuclei.
